Irish fiddle tunes are mostly 32 bars long and stay in first position. How hard could that be? But ask the leader of a top orchestra to sight- read a jig or reel, and the results will probably be laughable. The notes on the paper are just the starting point, and without an understanding of appropriate ornamentation and bowing, the results will be disappointing to say the least. In this workshop I will demonstrate a polka, a jig, and a reel, and try out some of the techniques, ornaments and bowing strategies which are essential to breathing the life into these wonderful tunes.
